Apple MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro is the Mac for work that runs all day at full tilt. If you edit video, build apps or work in large creative files, active cooling and the Liquid Retina XDR display are why it beats MacBook Air for you. Size is the first decision. The 14-inch keeps pro performance portable and is the only one offered with the plain M5 chip as the entry point, while the 16-inch gives you the bigger canvas with M5 Pro or M5 Max only. Chip is the second, M5 Pro for most editors and developers, M5 Max for 3D, multi-stream 8K and large AI models. Compare 14 and 16-inch configurations below.

14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro

Start with size, because it decides which chips you can have. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is the portable pro machine and the only size offered with the plain M5 chip, which makes it the entry point for photographers, developers and editors who want the XDR display and sustained performance without the Pro or Max chip. It also comes with M5 Pro and M5 Max. The 16-inch is offered with M5 Pro and M5 Max only. Its Liquid Retina XDR display gives timelines, code and canvases the room a desk monitor would, which is why editors and 3D artists who work on the laptop itself choose it.

M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max

M5 is enough for most creative work in Final Cut, Logic or Lightroom, and for app development. M5 Pro adds CPU and GPU cores and faster memory, and it is the chip for editors cutting 4K every day, developers compiling large projects and anyone who keeps a few heavy apps running together. M5 Max is for the jobs that saturate everything, multi-stream 8K, large 3D scenes, colour grading in high dynamic range and local AI models, and it comes with the largest memory configurations on the page, up to 48GB.

Memory and storage

Memory decides how many heavy projects stay responsive at once. 24GB suits most editors and developers, 32GB to 36GB suits large timelines and virtual machines, and 48GB is for the Max workloads above. Storage starts at 1TB here and runs to 2TB. If you work from fast external drives over Thunderbolt, 1TB is enough. If your active projects live on the laptop, take 2TB.

Is MacBook Air enough

If your heaviest work comes in bursts rather than hours, MacBook Air with M5 runs the same chip as the entry MacBook Pro, silently and for less. The Pro is the right buy when exports, builds or renders run long, when colour accuracy matters on the laptop screen, or when you need the Pro and Max chips. For a desk-bound pro machine, Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra pairs with Studio Display. MacBook Pro models with a Red Hot Deal are on the Apple MacBook deals page, and the whole laptop range is on the Apple MacBook page, online and in store at JB Hi-Fi.
